Brisbane, QLD – The Brisbane Bandits will host CPBL Taiwan Night at Viticon Stadium on Saturday night as part of Round 10 of the ABL season against the Canberra Calvary. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM AEST with gates opening at 5:30.

CPBL Commissioner Chi-Chang Tsai and Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner will both make appearances and interact with fans.

The Bandits currently have six players from the CPBL representing all six teams in the league. CPBL All-Star Namoh Iyang from the Wei-Chuan Dragons has been a vital member of the Bandits in the second half of the season. Entering Round 10 Iyang is hitting for a .236 BA and .348 OBP with 13 hits and a home run. He has provided key defense with 15 starts at shortstop including seven double plays turned.

The TSG Hawks’ Pao-Chi Hsieh has been a part of the Bandits’ starting rotation with three starts and 11 innings pitched since joining the team for the second half of the season. Chieh-Hung Yao from the Uni-Lions and Chai-Ming Lee of the Rakuten Monkeys have fortified the Bandits bullpen with 10 combined appearances between the two arms.

Taiwan is a growing baseball powerhouse having won the Premier12 tournament in November for their first ever major international tournament championship. 브리즈번 밴디츠(Brisbane Bandits) 구단은 호주리그(ABL) 퍼스 히트(Perth Heat)와의 6라운드 경기가 열리는 금요일 저녁 주브리즈번 대한민국 출장소와 함께 한국의 밤(Korea Night) 행사를 개최한다. 경기 시작 시간은 오후 6시 30분(호주 동부 표준시) 이며, 입장은 오후 5시 30분부터 가능하다.

The Bandits are proud to celebrate the Korea Community in Brisbane and their Korean ballplayers. The night will be highlighted by a free postgame meet and greet with all the Bandits’ Korean players in the Viticon Stadium club room (accessible by the stadium concourse behind home plate.) Fans will have the opportunity to ask questions, receive autographs and take pictures with the Korean players.

Brisbane has a proud partnership with the Samsung Lions of the KBO. Three Lions are playing for the Bandits over the course of the 2024-25 ABL season.

Brisbane’s Korean contingent is led by catcher Hyungchan Um. Currently ranked as the No. 25 prospect in the Kansas City Royals organisation he has become one of the best players in the ABL.

Um is hitting for a .319 BA with a team high 22 hits. The Seoul native has also bashed five home runs and driven in 13 RBI. His defense has been stellar including throwing out three baserunners while he is yet to allow a passed ball in 92 innings as a catcher.

The Consul General Mr. Kim Seong-yeon will throw out the first pitch on Friday night. The night will also include a live performance of the Korean national anthem and plenty of Korean music throughout the night.

Teacher Appreciation Night is Thursday 19 December with all teachers receiving half off grandstand tickets. Emergency Services Night is Thursday 2 January with all police officers, firefighters and ambos receiving half off admission prices. Thursday 16 January is Tradie Night with 50% discounted ticket prices for all trade workers. 

There’s plenty of fun for the whole family all summer long at Viticon Stadium.

Fans can wear their best Santa outfits to Christmas Night on Saturday 21 December and bring the pup to Bark in the Park presented by the Animal Welfare League Queensland on Sunday 5 January. 

Queensland Country Night presented by Farm Angels on Saturday 4 January celebrates the vibrant agriculture community in Queensland. Fans will be encouraged to dress in their favorite country attire and support Farm Angels through a variety of interactive games.

Viticon Stadium will conclude the regular season with Kids Day on Sunday 19 January with all children 14 and under receiving free admission.

Brisbane, QLD – Brisbane Samurai Japan defeated Team Taiwan 12-3 on Saturday night at the Carina Redsox Baseball Club. The Bandits were proud to sponsor the second annual game as a celebration of Asian Australian baseball in the community.

In front of a large crowd in Carina, the Samurai Japan team composed of local Brisbane baseball players with Japanese heritage used an offensive onslaught to defeat the Taiwan National Traveling Team.

The Bandits awarded prizes to the game MVP from Samurai Japan, most outstanding batter from Team Taiwan and most outstanding pitcher from Samurai Japan.

Along with local baseball fans and Bandits staff the big crowd included a variety of VIPs including William Fan, the Director General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office Brisbane, Charles Ou Yang, the Director of Queensland Taiwan Centre, Phyllis Lo, Commissioner of Overseas Community Affairs Council Taiwan, Anita Huang, the President of Australian Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce Queensland, Koda Chen, the President of Taiwan Friendship Association of Queensland, Grace Yu, the Brisbane Lord Mayor’s Charitable Trust Ambassador, Mlib Tmetuchl, the President of Palau Major League Baseball, Daisei Yamamoto, President of Brisbane Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mari Kurita President of Japanese Club of Brisbane and Kumi Ikeda a Representative from Brisbane Seinendan.

Lisa Norrie’s role as a roving coach for the Oakland Athletics takes her on a remarkable journey through the baseball world, traveling to various levels of the organization’s minor league system and the Major Leagues. Her recent experiences highlight not only her dedication and versatility but also the dynamic nature of the coaching profession in professional baseball.Currently, roving coaching is the ideal role for Lisa. It allows her to immerse herself in high-level coaching with the A’s affiliate teams while also returning home to share her expertise with local Australian athletes and spend quality time with family and friends.

Lisa Norrie’s odyssey began in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, where she joined the Athletics’ complex and worked closely with their DR affiliate. This initial stint was pivotal, involving extensive hands-on coaching and development with young players. Norrie’s efforts in the Dominican Republic bore fruit, as the hard work she invested with the players resulted in noticeable improvements and positive outcomes.

From the vibrant fields of Santo Domingo, Norrie’s journey led her to Arizona with the AZL Athletics, the team’s rookie ball affiliate. Her time in Arizona was marked by a significant milestone—her first win with the team, achieved on the last day of her stint. This victory not only highlighted her coaching prowess but also underscored her ability to motivate and lead players in high-pressure situations.

Norrie’s path then took her to Las Vegas, where she had the opportunity to work with the Athletics’ Triple-A team. This brief yet exhilarating visit provided her with a taste of the high-stakes environment of Triple-A baseball. The experience was immensely rewarding for Norrie, and she eagerly anticipates returning for a full series later in her tour. The energy and talent at this level offer a unique perspective and a chance to engage with players who are just a step away from the Major Leagues.

Her journey continued to Midland, Texas, where she joined the Double-A team. Norrie was impressed by the calibre of athletes and the intensity of their work ethic. “These guys are amazing athletes,” she remarked. “Their work ethic is next level, and they compete each day.” Her time in Midland was a testament to the dedication and perseverance of players striving to make their mark in professional baseball.

Following her time in Midland, Norrie made her way to Lansing, Michigan. Here, she praised both the players and the staff for their outstanding efforts. “These guys are awesome and work hard,” she noted. “The staff and content team are amazing.” The support and camaraderie in Lansing contributed to a positive and productive experience, reinforcing the importance of teamwork and mutual respect in the development of young players.

Norrie’s journey eventually brought her back to the Major Leagues. She had the opportunity to participate in a big-league game for the Athletics, spending the day on the field for batting practice and taking part in the national anthem ceremony. Observing from the dugout during the game provided her with a full-circle moment, connecting her experiences across the various affiliates with the pinnacle of professional baseball.

Lisa’s favourite part of the trip was being on the field and observing big-league coaching in action. She was amazed by how the top athletes prepared and executed their skills, particularly enjoying watching and helping Eric Martin with the infield drills as the players individually go their work in. Participating in the advanced meeting and seeing the team’s strategies up close was another highlight for her. The cherry on top was witnessing the team secure a win against the White Sox, making the experience even more memorable.

Norrie’s next stop was Stockton, California, where she spent a week with the Low-A team. Her time in Stockton was marked by another productive stint, with Norrie appreciating the hard work of both players and staff. “I had an awesome week here,” she shared. “The guys worked hard, and the staff were amazing.” Her time in Stockton further exemplified the commitment and passion that are crucial at every level of baseball.

Lisa’s final stop was with The A’s triple A team, the Las Vegas Aviators, which had been nothing short of amazing. From the players and coaching staff to the Clubbies and front office, everyone made her feel incredibly welcome and like part of the team. This group is top-notch—working hard and showcasing next-level talent.

Lisa Norrie’s recent tour of the Oakland Athletics’ affiliates illustrates the breadth and depth of her role as a roving coach. From the Dominican Republic to the Majors, her journey reflects a deep commitment to player development and a passion for the game. Sometimes in life you get lucky and an opportunity presents itself out of the blue. Other times, you create your own opportunities through hard work, perseverance and skill.

This story is the latter:

Australian softball/baseball player and coach, Lisa Norrie has earned an invite from MLB’s Oakland Athletics to participate in their Instructional League.

3 years ago she was invited to Instructional League as a guest coach by Ed Sprague, the Director of Player Development with the A’s, whom she had met at the MLB winter meetings (her second of two visits). As her contract was being prepared, covid hit and that dream was over…or so she thought.

Last month she received an email from Mr. Sprague, asking if she was still interested. The answer was a resounding, “yes,” and within a week, Oakland employees had set her up with flights, visas and uniforms. She will be there for 4 weeks working with athletes who are on the cusp of being signed for the majors and spending time with some of the best coaches in the sport.

Norrie has definitively made her mark in Australian Baseball. She played softball for New South Wales, then played for and coached the Queensland women’s baseball team. She was assistant coach for the Australian women’s national team in the 2016 Women’s Baseball World Cup, where they finished 5th against some very tough competition, besting Cuba, South Korea and the United States. Lisa was then hired by the Brisbane Bandits as assistant coach for the 2017-2018 ABL season, becoming the first woman to coach in Australia’s top league. She also coached for Australia in the 2018 Women’s Baseball World Cup.

In her own words, “I’m really excited and honoured to be given this opportunity. To be the first female from Australia to be invited to Instructional League is a huge achievement and I hope I can open the door for other females from here to get the same opportunity.”

“I will be on field most days with training sessions in the morning and games in the afternoon. We will have coaches meetings daily which will be great to see how things run in the minors, and I’ll be able to pick the brains of some really experienced coaches”

“I can’t wait to get there and get to work.”

The Bandits wish Lisa all the best, and are incredibly honoured to be a part of her Baseball journey.
